Baptism
Holy Baptism is the ancient rite of initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body, the Church. It is a public statement of a person’s decision to follow the way of Jesus. In the case of infant baptism, it is the parents’ declaratio
n of their intent to raise their child in the way of Jesus. The bond that God establishes in baptism is forever and cannot be dissolved, so baptism is only administered once. Baptism is usually held during a church service and is especially appropriate at certain church holidays.
Baptism is open to all people, regardless of age or background. In the baptismal ceremony, those being baptized make a vow, or in the case of an infant, the vow is made on their behalf. At the same time, the entire congregation renews its own baptismal covenant. This covenant calls for believing in Jesus and the Trinity, renouncing evil, and striving for justice and peace among all people.
